“Insung Information’s telemedicine healthcare products are exported to 16 countries, including the US and Europe.”
“Insung Information is one of the leading companies in the global healthcare hub market,” stressed Won Jong-yoon, CEO of Insung Information, an information technology (IT) infrastructure company that has been growing its smart healthcare business in areas such as telemedicine systems over the past several years. Indeed, while health care hub solutions such as Insung Information’s telemedicine systems are under actual use in the medical field mainly in the US and in European countries, it has advanced into several other countries including Italy and Southeast Asia under pilot projects. As such, while the company is one of the leading providers of telemedicine systems abroad, its smart healthcare sales within Korea do not amount to much. The reason for this is the virtual blockade of telemedicine due to a variety of regulations.
Speaking on the subject, Won said, “While other countries are already two or three steps ahead of us, Korea has not even taken the first step in telemedicine.” He emphasized that “the terms telemedicine and non-face-to-face care only refer to the external form in which the care takes place,” and that “data is what is most important in the mid- to long term for true smart healthcare.” Expressing his disappointment, Won said, “The fatal problem in Korea that keeps the field stuck here is that telemedicine has been blocked, and that keeps actual field data from being accumulated…if we could only institutionalize telemedicine through arbitration by the nurses, who are medical practitioners themselves, Korea would be able to get the experience and data needed to move on to the next level.”
The Hicare Hub telemedicine system, developed and exported by Insung Information, sends data directly to the doctor in charge of a patient who performs tests such as blood pressure, electrocardiograms, and blood sugar tests at home. This data is checked by the doctor in charge to ascertain the health status of the patient. If abnormalities are detected in the data, the doctor can use video to request a re-measurement by the patient which can then be done using the correct posture or method. This results in a solution that allows one to receive medical treatment through health monitoring services at home without visiting the hospital. The greatest strength of Hicare Hub is its compatibility. Currently, problems with compatibility often occur when sending biometric data by the majority of medical devices to other devices. This is due to the fact that each medical device uses a different data sorting and transmission method for ordering listed information or the specific data itself. However, as Hicare Hub is linked with some 120 medical devices used worldwide, it transforms the data into an international standard even if the data from each medical device is being sent in a different form. This means no need for hospitals to put together or purchase separate medical devices that are linked together.
On top of Hicare Hub, Insung Information has launched Hicare M, a healthcare system for mobile devices that makes it possible for consumers to receive medical services regardless of location. Where it differs from Hicare Hub, which is used to connect all kinds of medical devices, is that Hicare M only makes use of medical devices with a Bluetooth connection. While there were very few medical devices that provided Bluetooth connectivity in the past, many companies that are aware of the telemedicine market are now releasing medical devices that are able to connect using Bluetooth. Connecting a medical device to Hicare M via Bluetooth allows one to receive the same medical services as those on Hicare Hub through one’s smartphone.
Having built a reputation for telemedicine abroad, Insung Information has also been selected for a project for the United States Department of Veteran Affairs. A total of 8,000 units have been exported for this, which are used for the comprehensive health and chronic disease management of over 5,000 veteran households.
